The making of a book

Check out this video about how books were made in 1947. Nothing to it, huh?

That is really something to behold. Think of all the jobs book publishing used to support. I remember working with old typesetters in the 90s, the last of their breed, union guys whose job was to set type. Not with metal by then, but with photography, physically laying out a magazine line by line by maneuvering sticky-backed bits of photographed type on a white board. Their entire job function is now done as a half-hearted after-thought by 25 year-olds working in InDesign, when it's not just automatically taken care of by the software.
